The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports Council presented the Michael Feulner Award to Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC) on September 20, 2016. Nearly 500 employees of CVMC ran or walked in the Vermont Corporate Cup last May to encourage worksite wellness and raise funds for health and fitness programs in Vermont. The employees – about 200 runners and 300 walkers –  participated in fitness breaks together in the weeks leading up to the event and walked or ran in the race as a team.

The Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race is held annually in Montpelier on the third Thursday in May, in conjunction with National Employees Health and Fitness Day. Proceeds support programs of the Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. This year’s funds will go toward Exercise Is Medicine community wellness grants for the development of wellness initiatives that slow, stop, and reverse the progression of chronic diseases in Vermont.

The Michael Feulner Award honors the worksite with the highest employee participation in the race. It is named for a former council member and longtime co-director of the race. This year’s runners up for the award included National Life (253 employees participating) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont (172 employees participating). A total of 4,231 people ran or walked in the race.

Fuelner presented the award along with council members David Butsch, a physician affiliated with CVMC, and James Pepper, Intergovernmental Affairs Director for Governor Shumlin’s office. A team of 10 CVMC employees accepted the award, including CEO Judy Tartaglia and Vice President of Human Resources, Robert Patterson.

This marks the 6th year that CVMC has participated in the Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race. The hospital, part of The University of Vermont Health Network, annually pays employees’ race entry fees and provides commemorative t-shirts to participants. It’s part of the hospital’s larger effort to foster employee wellness through physical fitness, social interaction, and community involvement.

“The Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race is all about employee wellness. Clearly CVMC understands the connections between work, lifestyle, relationships and wellbeing to an employee’s overall health,” said Janet Franz, council chair. “When people feel good both inside and outside the workplace, they are invested in their work and provide superior service. We are delighted to reward and encourage this effort.”

The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is a physical activity promotion and advocacy group comprised of volunteers appointed by the Governor of Vermont and representing a broad spectrum of Vermonters. The council’s mission, defined in the legislation passed in 1986, is to promote health and wellness through physical activity for all people living in Vermont at all fitness and ability levels.
