The Vermont Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports is pleased to present George Plumb with a Lifetime Leadership Award in Fitness and Sports. George has dedicated his life to supporting the health and fitness of Vermonters.
A longtime member of the Council, George served as Chair of the Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race from 1984 till 1996 and several years after his retirement he always assisted on race day. He supervised the two mile marker and water stop for many years. His vision of employee health and fitness was way ahead of the times. George worked hard, especially during the early years, correlating results and registrations by hand. The evolution of the Corporate Cup Challenge and State Agency Race — including adding the “Corporate” perspective to include more Vermont workers, switching from 10K to a 5K, and changing locations to the Statehouse Lawn in Montpelier — were all visions that George developed and implemented with the ultimate outcome to improve the health of Vermonters through physical activity. The event that George started in 1984 is now the second largest road race in the state, and a beloved Vermont tradition.For many, training for this event was the springboard they needed to live a healthier lifestyle. That was George’s ultimate goal and he worked hard to achieve that outcome.
George was the first Executive Director of the Vermont Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition and the founder of the Vermont Trails and Greenways Council and Vermont Earth Institute.
Longtime race committee member and former Council member Mike Feulner presented the Lifetime Leadership Award in Fitness and Sports to George Plumb in March 2021.
